There was positive news for Charleville at this week’s meeting of Kanturk-Mallow Municipal District when it was revealed that the town plaza will be greatly enhanced and renamed Bruce Place. The plaza, which is set back from the Main Street, already contains the town library which is housed in the former Protestant church, and it is planned that the area in front of the library will be turned into a public realm space for performances, with vertical gardens, redesigned railings, tiered seating, attractive landscaping, planters and more. The plaza also contains the historic Bruce family burial vault. The project will see a link created between the plaza and the town park, with a tree-lined path and a signalled pedestrian crossing leading to the park, where a new playground has been installed. The news was welcomed by Cllr Ian Doyle who said that the project represents a major infrastructure investment in the town of Charleville. “This will add greatly to the super facility which is our town park and library area, and will also safely link our busy main street to the car park, town park and playground,” he said. Work on the pedestrian crossing should be completed this Autumn, with other enhancement works to follow.
