Mallow Youthreach has been awarded a grant from the European Commission to take part in the Erasmus+ programme. This represents the first time that Mallow Youthreach has achieved such an honour. The programme encourages students to develop an understanding of cultural diversity by communicating with people from other countries. The students involved will have the opportunity to visit the country of their newfound friends, experiencing the traditions and lifestyle first hand. For many, it will be their first time travelling abroad, adding to the experience.
Being granted the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus programme has taken both time and commitment. Both the students and staff are very proud of their achievement and are looking forward to the experience. The students and staff will fly to Germany where they will tour the city of Hamburg, experiencing the history and sights of the city. Shortly after, the students from Hamburg will visit Ireland, experiencing the culture of Ireland, with the assistance and guidance of the students from Mallow Youthreach.
Trish Stack who has coordinated and guided the students through the process has said that she is very proud of the students’ accomplishments. “Bím sceitimini orm go taisteal me agus na daltai go dti an Gearmain.”
The Co-ordinator of the centre, Olive O’Donnell, speaking of the students’ success, has stated that, ‘I hope this Erasmus journey to Germany will broaden the minds, strengthen the independence and remind our students that learning has no borders.’’
The opportunity and achievement have been acknowledged by both staff and parents/guardians, and will no doubt be celebrated and remembered long after the students have progressed to further education and employment. It stands as an inspiration for those who will follow, leaving a lasting impact on Mallow Youthreach. It is hoped that the friendships and understanding of diversity formed from the Erasmus experience will last, far beyond the students’ time in Mallow Youthreach.
