On the 10th and 11th February, 5th Year Visual Art students at St Mary’s Secondary School took part in a two-day workshop with professional artist Glenn Gibson as part of the Creative Engagement Programme. This valuable experience allowed students to immerse themselves in the creative process, developing their skills and exploring the discipline of 3D wire modelling under the guidance of a practising visual artist.
The workshop also deepened students’ understanding of the Leaving Certificate Visual Art curriculum, particularly the ‘Processes and Media’ strand. On the first day, students experimented with techniques and created miniature tree prototypes. Building on these skills, they collaborated on the second day to produce a larger wire sculpture titled ‘The Legacy Tree’.
The finished piece is now proudly displayed in the Senior Corridor for the entire school community to enjoy. This installation reflects the ethos of St. Mary’s Secondary School; nurturing the growth and wellbeing of each individual and supporting them in reaching their full potential from the ground up.
Congratulations to all 5th Year Visual Art students on creating such a beautiful and meaningful piece. Sincere thanks to everyone involved: Creative Engagement programme; to our talented artist Glenn Gibson; Principal Andrea Murphy; Vice Principals Sinead Luttrell and Damien Moloney; the Board of Management; our caretakers Danny and Mike; and Art teachers Mrs. Joelle Barton and Mr. O’Sullivan.
