Cork senior hurlers had a deeply disappointing day in Croke Park last Saturday when they crashed out of the All Ireland Championship to a resurgent Galway, but Rebel fans had something to cheer about a day later when the county’s minor footballers secured a brilliant comeback to beat Tyrone by 2-16 to 1-16 in the All Ireland Final at Cedral St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge. Trailing by nine points early in the second half, the team turned the tide and outscored Tyrone by 2-9 to 0-3 in a frantic finish, thus bringing the Tom Markham Cup back to Leeside for the first time since 2019.
Gabriel Oronsaye from Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels came off the bench to help the team to a famous victory in front of a huge travelling Cork support, and other North Cork players on the panel included Mark Power from Charleville, and Billy Looney from Banteer. Congratulations to all, and to manager Keith Ricken and his team.
