Mallow Search and Rescue, which is one of the shortlisted groups in line for an IBP Pride of Place award, was visited last Monday by adjudicators John Briggs and Brendan McGrath, and volunteers gave them a run-down on the work which they have been carrying out all over Munster and further afield in locating missing people in Ireland’s waterways.
On Monday the adjudicators were also given a tour of the unit’s Broom Lane premises, which houses its RIBs and rescue vessels, plus vital equipment such as sonar which can help locate people underwater. The unit, which has been in existence for over 30 years, is fully-funded through charitable donations, and local communities are very grateful for the work which they do in such difficult circumstances.
Each year there are approximately 120 drown-ings in Ireland’s waterways. The victims of these tragic events are often not found immediately, leading to prolonged periods of anguish and distress for relatives. Mallow Search and Rescue members aim to find people who have been missing and return them to their families.
Cork County Council has extended its best wishes to all participating groups and congratulated them on reaching the national adjudication stage of these prestigious awards. The dedication, passion and commitment demonstrated by the volunteers and community organisations involved reflect the very best of County Cork and showcase the strength of community spirit throughout the county.
