Three locals, Liam and Marie Herlihy of Monagea and Ollie Moran (Castle-connell) will take part in the Team CRY Ireland Charity Challenge on the Portuguese Camino from this Friday. Participants will hike the Portuguese Coastal Route along the Atlantic coastline from Portugal into Spain to raise funds for CRY Ireland (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
CRY Ireland is an all-island charity that provides free emotional support services, facilitates access to free screening and supports research and awareness initiatives for people across Ireland affected by inherited cardiac conditions or the loss of a young person to sudden cardiac death.
Liam is a Trustee of CRY and, along with his wife Marie and others, including the O’Donovan/Scanlan families, was behind the successful ‘Monagea for CRY’ Charity Walk/Run/Cycle from 2013 to 2024.
From the famed Ahane GAA club, Ollie is a much-decorated former hurler at club and county level. The Challenge was on his bucket list.
Lucia Ebbs, CEO of CRY Ireland, who will also take part, said: “Those who have taken part in previous years have found the Camino journey to be a valuable opportunity to come together and build meaningful connections with others on similar paths.”
She added that the Camino fundraiser plays a vital role in supporting CRY Ireland’s mission. Funds raised help the organisation continue its commitment to families affected by sudden cardiac death, providing essential services such as their freephone Helpline and the Family Support Programme.
The charity was founded in 2002 by Michael and Marie Greene of Howth, County Dublin, following the death of their son Peter some years earlier.
