On Thursday, 25th June, there were celebrations in Mallow Convent Primary School after a very successful year in sport, art, athletics and music.
Teams from the school won the Irish Orienteering Championships at Castlecomer Discovery Park in Co. Kilkenny, and there were also individual winners in 5th and 6th classes. Success has followed these girls, as they have previously won Munster and County titles. The girls were presented with their cup and plaques to recognise their huge efforts. Sarah O’Malley and Sarah Walsh will be taking part in the World Handball Championships over the summer, and Andrea White represented the school in the Primary Game in Pairc Ui Rinn recently. Zara Amoudi is County Champion in 100m sprint in the Cork City Sports which was held in CIT on 14th June. This was the school’s first time entering this event, and the U11 relay team also won the County Final. We are very proud of all the team and hope to have even more success next year. The team are proud of their medals and the cup which they won for the school.
Pupils have taken part in the Mallow Town Swimming Gala, Jamie Wall Blitz Sciath na Scol Blitz and also a schools blitz in camogie and football for 4th/5th and 6th classes which all enjoyed very much. Twelve girls from sixth class were presented with awards for their contribution to music in the school, and we are very proud of the children who participated successfully in the Community Games Art and Credit Union Art Competitions. Pupils also successfully took part in the Credit Union and Baltydaniel NS Quiz during the school year.
Mrs Anne Marie Lucey was presented with a card by Shanna Darsan, 5th class, a presentation from the staff of the Convent Primary School, from Kieran Murphy on behalf of the Board of Management, and by Trish Barrett and Niamh Muldoon from the Parents’ Association on her retirement after 40 years teaching in the Convent Primary School. The sixth class girls sang their version of ‘Wagon Wheel’ as a wonderful tribute to Mrs Lucey. It was a fitting tribute to a much-loved teacher who will be greatly missed. The school and parents had very much enjoyed the production of ‘Hairspray’ as performed by sixth class on 24th June.
Mrs. Kathleen McCarthy has also retired and a presentation was made to Kathleen on behalf of the staff, Board of Management and Parents Association. Kathleen has made a great contribution to the school and has ensured its smooth financial running over the past eight years, and we are very grateful for all her efforts. The staff, pupils, Board of Management and Parents’ Association are united in wishing both Anne Marie and Kathleen health and happiness on their retirement. Tá súil again go mbainfidh sibh sult agus taithneamh as. Looking forward to another busy year when the school re-opens on August 31st.
