The East Cork town of Youghal will be chock-a-block with athletes of all ages this weekend as the town hosts the internationally famous Ironman competition, and huge numbers of men and women will go to the line for the event. The full Ironman will go ahead on Sunday, featuring a 2.4-mile sea swim, a 120-mile cycle and a 26.2-mile marathon, and Youghal will be full of spectators to cheer the athletes on. On Saturday, the Ironman 70.3 – or Half-Ironman, as some people call it – will see competitors do half the distances of the full event, and there will also be a short race for young athletes.
Mallow Triathlon Club, which has members from all over North Cork and further afield, will have strong representation at both events, while there will also be local individuals taking on the challenge, and we wish them all the best.
Anyone travelling to participate or watch the events is advised that traffic restrictions will be in place, so give yourself plenty of time to get to the seaside town.
