Galbally National School 4th class pupil Tara Grogan has received a special National Ambul-ance Service Bravery Award in recognition of actions that saved her father’s life earlier this year, writes John Barrett.
Matthew Grogan’s wife, Claire, had left for work when he collapsed at their home in Ardnamoher, Galbally last March. His three daughters found Matthew lying on the floor in an unresponsive state and with a laceration to the back of his head. Tara quickly rang 999, explained what had happened and was able to give the telephone number and Eircode details. “With guidance from the emergency service and assistance from her sisters Taylor and Chloe, she then made her dad comfortable while they waited for an ambulance,” Matthew’s wife Claire told the Vale Star.

Calm response
“The girls rang me to explain what had happened. Matthew was alert but disorientated when I got home. The ambulance team then arrived and took over his care. They were very impressed by Tara’s calm response and ability for quick thinking during a crisis. The crew wanted to acknowledge her actions and also at the same time educate other children regarding safety in the home. We are extremely proud of all our three girls and would like to thank the ambulance team for their fantastic help on the day the incident occurred. Not only did they care for Matthew but they also took the time to speak to our children, ensuring that they were OK too.” Tara Grogan accepted the bravery award from Pat McCarthy of the National Ambulance Service when he visited Galbally National School on Monday last. Pat spoke to all the pupils and stressed the importance of having an Eircode displayed prominently in the home in the event of an emergency.
