BT Young Scientist success for St. Mary’s students

There was success for St. Mary’s Secondary School, Mallow, at the recent BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, last week in the RDS, Dublin. Winners were announced on Friday, and second year students Sophie McQuillan and Róisín Grant came first in the junior section of the Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences Category. Their project was titled ‘An Investigation into the Photolytic Degradation of the Nitrate Radical (NO3) by Light Pollution in Cork City and County’. They were mentored by teacher Rory Coote. Second year students Clodagh Lehane and Camille Ní Shúilleabháin also competed in the junior section of the Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences Category, and their project was titled, ‘A Study of an Alternative to SAR Testing to Compare Mobile Phone Emissions’. They were mentored by teacher Cáit Thompson. Well done to the four girls and many thanks to everyone who helped them along the way.
