Buttevant ladies raise €4,000 for ARC Cancer Support House

On Sunday 16th September a group of Buttevant ladies joined with friends from Ballyhooly, Cork and Grenagh to complete the 31st Cork Women’s Mini Marathon to raise funds for Cork ARC Cancer Support House. Last Friday, we had a presentation night in McCarthy’s Bar, Buttevant, where June Whyte presented a cheque for €4,000 to Rita Murray, who was representing Cork ARC Cancer Support House on the night. Unfortunately everyone has been touched by cancer at some stage in their lives, whether it is through a family member, friend or colleague, and we are glad to be able to assist Cork ARC Cancer Support House which is a voluntary organisation established to provide a holistic centre where people with cancer and their families can avail of support and therapies. All services are provided free of charge and the costs of running of the centre is met entirely through voluntary fundraising.

The meeting point for our group at the mini marathon was City Hall and once all were assembled and a few stretches completed, we headed for the starting point. The atmosphere on the day was electric, and the route a sea of colour t-shirts representing various charities. In excess of 10,000 ladies ran, jogged and walked the route, raising much-needed funds to support various charities. Many men also joined in the fun by completing the run wearing pink, wigs, tights and dresses etc. We have already got a number of local male volunteers who are really looking forward to getting in touch with their feminine side for the 2013 run! All of the group completed the course and after collecting our medals, we walked ‘another marathon’ to Reardens of Washington Street, which in association with Cork ARC Cancer Support House provided soup and sandwiches for the race participants. Refreshments at that point were very welcome and simply delicious!

We want to thank sincerely all who gave so generously towards this worthy cause. Thanks to Teddy for the transport to and from the race, and to McCarthys for Friday night. And finally on behalf of the group, a big ‘thank you’ to our chef de mission June! Cork ARC Cancer Support House can be contacted on 021 4276688 or e-mail info@corkcancersupport.ie.
