BUTTEVANT SCHOOL GOES TO PLANNING PHASE

Plans for a new second level school in Buttevant have taken a giant leap forward following the submission to Cork County Council of a planning application. Plans for Coláiste Pobal, Naomh Mhuire, Buttevant, were submitted to Cork County Council on December 20th, and if there is no hitch the Council may give the green light before the end of March.

The state-of-the-art school, to be constructed on a greenfield site on the edge of the town, will accommodate the most up-to-date facilities such as lecture rooms, ICT and laboratories, specialist workshops and prep rooms, science laboratories, admin rooms, specialist learning support centres, social areas, canteen, fitness suite and fully equipped gym-nasium. New technologies such as solar panels, solar heat gain, room ventilation systems and renewable water systems play a vital part in how the building will operate on comp-letion. The outside campus will have student seating and dining areas, considerable hard-court areas, general play and circulation areas, land-scaped gardens, generous parking and a school training pitch.

Sources this week expressed optimism that the long awaited new school will be ready for occupation in September 2014. See illustration of it on page 20.
