Buttevant jockey Shane Fitzgerald won’t forget Cheltenham Festival 2022 in a hurry after he rode his first winner on day two of the festival, piloting ‘Commander Of Fleet’ first past the post in the Coral Cup, closely followed by Darragh O’Keeffe from Doneraile, who was aboard ‘Fastorslow’ and gave it everything he had in the exciting run-in. It was a wonderful moment for the Buttevant jockey, trainer Gordon Elliot and owner Michael O’Leary, and not forgetting the punters who were celebrating a very tasty 50/1 winner. Speaking to Racing TV after his win, Shane said, “It’s going to take a while to sink in. To even get a ride in the likes of here, on the likes of that type of horse, it’s unbelievable. I can’t thank Gordon or Mr O’Leary enough for giving me the opportunities.”
Congratulations to Shane, and to Darragh whose own Cheltenham win can’t be too far way, and check out next week’s issue of the Vale/Mallow Star for an interview with both jockeys.
