Call to name Mallow boardwalk after Dan Joe Fitzgerald

A proposal to name the new boardwalk on Mallow Bridge after the late Cllr Dan Joe Fitzgerald was passed unanimously last Friday at the monthly meeting of Kanturk Mallow Municipal District. Work on the construction of a boardwalk across Mallow Bridge will begin in the new year, and the chairman of the Kanturk-Mallow Municipal District, Cllr. Gearóid Murphy, proposed that it be named after the late councillor who gave so many years of service to Mallow Town Council and Cork Co. Council.
Speaking on his proposal, Cllr. Murphy said: “Since I became a councillor, I have [gained] some insight into the huge legacy of public service which Dan Joe left, not only to the town of Mallow, with which he was always most strongly identified, but also to the whole region of North Cork. This reputation goes across party lines, and people of all parties and none have said to me that something should be done to show recognition for his exceptional career of public service.
“There were two major parts of Dan Joe’s professional life – his business and his role as a public representative. His contributions to business were recognised last year at the Mallow Business Awards. I think it is now fitting that the council would recognise the other aspect of his career – that is his spirit of volunteerism and record of service as a representative for his community.”
The motion received the unanimous support of all councillors, and will now go forward to the full council, where the procedure to be followed for naming the boardwalk will be determined.
