Cast on … Knit Away is an exhibition of the work of the County Library’s Knitting Groups put together by library staff . The exhibition was launched by Mayor John Paul O’Shea in Library HQ , Carrigrohane Road, Cork, on Thursday 9th June . There are 20 knitting and crochet groups represented – Kanturk, Macroom, Mallow, Fermoy, Ballincollig, Ballyvourney, Bandon, Carrigaline, Castletownbere, Clonakilty, Cobh, Dunmanway, Glanmire, Midleton, Passage West, Skibbereen and Youghal Libraries. On display is everything from an amazing knitted replica of the GPO, to a chess set, and a cuckoo clock to a multitude of adorable toys and garments.

There has been a revival of interest in knitting in recent years and the library knitting groups are ensuring that this skill and the tradition of knitting which has been part of Irish life and heritage for centuries continues to live on and survive to pass it on to future generations. Added to this is the social aspect of these groups as people from the community meet regularly and work together.

Mallow Library was represented by work from the two adult knitting groups and of course by work from the only children’s knitting group in the county: Mallow Library Knitwits. Come along to Library HQ , on the County Hall Campus and enjoy this exhibition, Monday to Friday 9.30am -5pm.
