Channel swimmers switch codes to rugby for an evening

President of Sundays Well RFC Liam Maher with his guest Adrian Healy at last Saturday’s match between Sunday’s Well RFC and Mallow RFC in Virgin Media Park, a game which Mallow won21-14. Liam and Adrian are both English Channel solo swimmers, and Liam also crewed for Adrian when he completed the marathon swim.

Adrian Healy from Mallow and Sundays Well RFC President Liam Maher are both noted open water swimmers, and both have also conquered the Channel Swim between England and France in years past, but last weekend they met on dry land when Liam invited Adrian to Virgin Media Park in Cork city to watch a game between Mallow RFC and Sundays Well. The home team were considered favourites, but Mallow turned the tables on the evening, leading from start to finish and securing an impressive 21-14 win.
As well as the rugby, Adrian and Liam had lots to talk about, as they have regularly been training partners during swims over the years, and Liam even crewed on the boat when Adrian completed the 21-mile Channel Swim in under 12 hours in August 2020. Adrian was very grateful to Liam for the invitation to attend the game between Mallow and Sundays Well, and of course was delighted that his home town team was victorious on the night.
