Charleville Festival of History

The Festival of History takes place in Charleville from today, Thursday to Sunday, 10th September. The timetable of events is as follows:
Thursday September 7th, 8pm – Charleville Park Hotel, official welcome by Ian Doyle, Chairman of Charleville Heritage Society, followed by the official opening of Eigse Sean Clarach Mac Domhnaill by poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice, and an Evening of Spoken Word, Music and Craic with Gabriel Fitzmaurice and Seamus Barra O Suilleabhain and local poets Sr. Bernadette Maria, Donal O’Flynn, Fiona Fitzpatrick, Dave Gormley and Peter Keating. Music by Catherine Horgan and friends. Admission €5.
Friday September 8th, 11am – Charleville Library, members of Charleville Library Writing Group will host a reading of their works. This will be followed by a discussion on Creative Writing in the Community, led by Denyse Woods, Writer-in-Residence at Cork County Council Library and Arts Service. Come along for great stories, great writing and good fun. Admission free.
2pm – ‘Golden Vale Remembered 1947-2017’ Photographic Exhibition at the Provincial Heritage Centre, Mercy Convent, Main Street Charleville. Admission free.
8pm – Gala Concert at the Charleville Park Hotel with MC Bibi Baskin, former TV presenter, Dermot Lyons, finalist in TG4 Glor Tire Series, Musica Fusion Junior Orchestra, Harpist Rachel O’Connor, Cork County Comhaltas Champion, Cahirmee Singers, Craobh an Rath Comhaltas Group, Charleville Folk Group, storyteller Jim Barry, Billy O’Brien, John Murphy, and dancer Kelley Hartnett.
The formalisation of the twinning arrangement between Charleville Heritage Society and Croesgoch Wales Heritage Society will also take place during the evening. Admission, €10.
Saturday September 9th, 9.30am – Provincial Heritage Centre, Mercy Convent, Poetry Workshop with Poet Noel King, Tralee. Admission free.
2pm – Visit to the grave of Sean Clarach MacDomhnaill at Holy Cross Cemetery
2.30pm – Reception at E-Centre for Croesgoch visitors, hosted by P.J McCarthy, President, Charleville Chamber.
3.30pm – Visit to Mercy Provincial Heritage Centre for ‘Golden Vale Remembered,’ Photographic Exhibition. Admission free.
7.30pm – Shoestring Theatre Company will present William Lyons in ‘A Night in November’ at the Charleville Park Hotel. Admission, €10.
9.30pm – Ceili with All Ireland Winning Shandrum Ceili Band. Admission €10.
Sunday September 10th, 12 noon – Mass in Irish at Holy Cross Church.
2.15 pm – Walking tour to places of interest around Charleville town, conducted by Ian Doyle and Owen Binchy. Wrap-up address by Ian Doyle, Chairman Charleville Heritage Society.
