Charleville through to Co Senior A HC final

Charleville hurlers who beat Kanturk in the Senior A County semi-final last Saturday at mallow GAA Complex.

Charleville are through to this Sunday’s Co Senior A HC final following their win over Kanturk at Mallow on Saturday. The Duhallow side opened well.
They had early points by Alan Walsh and Ryan Walsh. Charleville opened their account in the 6th minute when Jack Meade and Gavin Kelleher worked well for Jack Doyle who sent over. Brian O’Sullivan with a free made it 0-3 to 0-1. Further Kanturk pressure led to a pointed free by Lorcan McLough-lan with Ryan Walsh opening up a four-point lead 0-5 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. Charleville fought back well. They won a lot of ball in the half back line and a series of points by Jack Doyle, Darragh Fitzgibbon (2) and Gavin Kelleher had them level 0-5 each by the 14th minute. A side line cut by Darragh Fitzgibbon to Danny O’Flynn saw Fitzgibbon take the return pass and gave his side the lead. Finbarr Cagney followed with a good point as Charleville held a 0-7 to 0-5 lead at the water break.
On the resumption Alan Walsh placed Lorcan O’Neill for a point. Darragh Fitzgibbon replied from a free. In the 20th minute Jack Doyle with a good point opened up a 3-point lead 0-9 to 0-6. Good play by Darren Browne to Liam O’Keeffe led to a foul with Lorcan McLoughlan pointing the free. Darren Browne placed James Fitzpatrick who cut the lead to a point. Alan Sheehy was in great form for Kanturk in defence. Good play for the Rathluirc side by Jack Callaghan led to a foul on Danny O’Flynn with Darragh Fitzgibbon opening up a two-point lead from the free. Lorcan McLoughlan forced Cian Collins to save well. The rebound to Aidan Walsh led to the first goal as Kanturk were now 1-8 to 0-10 ahead. Ryan Walsh forced a ‘65 that Lorcan McLoughlan converted. Kanturk were reduced to 14 players when a key player was red carded. Fitzgibbon with another free left just a point between the sides at the break 1-9 to 0- 11.
For the second half Kanturk moved Lorcan O’Neill to midfield. James O’Brien came on as a substitute and was very impressive.
Charleville also introduced Tim Hawe, Mark Kavanagh and Cathal Carroll. All played a leading role in their success. In fact, 7 points of their second half tally came from substitutes. Kanturk struggled from here on. They were level at 1-10 to 0-13 after Brian O’Sullivan pointed a free. Points in succession by Darragh Fitzgibbon, Danny O’Flynn and James O’Brien (3) had Charleville ahead 0-18 to 1-10. Brian O’Sullivan and Jack Callaghan swopped a point before a foul on Alan Walsh led to a penalty that Anthony Nash goaled from 0-19 to 2-11. Darragh Fitzgibbon added two pointed frees as Charleville were 0-21 to 2-11 ahead at the water break.
On the resumption Kanturk had a point by Brian O’Sullivan. Good play by Alan Sheehy and Ian Walsh led to a Paul Walsh point 0-21 to 2-13. Kanturk had two wides. Paul Walsh cut the lead to a point 0-21 to 2-14. Charleville finished very well. Good play by Alan Dennehy led to a James O’Brien point. Mark Kavanagh placed Jack Doyle for a point. Tim Hawe pointed for Charleville 0-24 to 2-15. Mark Kavanagh pointed from long range. Kanturk had a goal by Ian Walsh. Andrew Cagney replied with a goal for Charleville as they moved 1-26 to 3- 15 ahead. Brian O’Sullivan landed a late free for Kanturk. In the end Charleville with a second goal by Andrew Cagney emerged winners by a six-point margin.
