Civic plaza falls behind schedule

Hopes that work on the Mallow civic plaza will be completed by mid-June are fading fast after reported delays in the construction. The plaza project has come in for severe criticism in recent months due to ongoing construction which has caused traffic congestion and deterred people from coming into the town centre. Also, Bridge Street was scheduled to re-open to two-way traffic in mid-May, but as we approach the June Bank Holiday weekend, the street is still closed to northbound traffic. Paving finally started in the past week on Bridge Street, Tuckey’s Hill and Spa Square, and the plaza is taking shape, but there appears to be a lot still to do to complete the job.

Meanwhile, on the retail front two long-established shops are reported to be going out of business shortly, with unconfirmed rumours that others will follow in the weeks and months to come.
