Cllr. Gearóid Murphy Elected as Cathaoirleach of Kanturk-Mallow

Cllr. Gearóid Murphy (FF) was elected as Cathaoirleach of the Kanturk-Mallow Municipal District at the Annual General Meeting on Friday 4th July. Cllr. Murphy has served as a Councillor for the Mallow Electoral Area since 2017, having been co-opted onto Cork County Council in 2017 and re-elected in 2019 and 2024. Cllr. Ronan Sheehan (Labour) was elected as Deputy Chair and the outgoing Chair was Cllr. Pat Hayes (FF).
Speaking after the election, Cllr. Murphy said: “I am truly honoured to have been elected as Cathaoirleach. Over the next year, I will work as hard as I can to repay the trust which has been placed in me by my colleagues and the voters who elected me. My aim is to be a Cathaoirleach for the entire Municipal District and to champion the issues common to all areas. Housing will be one of my top priorities and I will continue to advocate for more social and affordable housing to be built by Cork County Council, so as to meet the very high demand for this. I will also promote policies which allow people to build and acquire their own houses in the local area.
“I will also advocate for a greater focus on core services and the hiring of additional outdoor staff. It is so important that our roads, footpaths and amenities be maintained properly. I would also like to promote speed control measures in built-up areas, as there is great demand for this on the ground, but few resources available for the Council to draw on. Finally, there are a number of important local projects which I will continue to push for. These include the Cork-Limerick Motorway, the Mallow Relief Road, the 400m athletics track planned for Carhookeal, the redevelopment of Mallow Town Hall into a theatre and the upgrading of Mallow Swimming Pool.”
