Council plans major enhancement works at Mallow Castle

Major enhancement works are set to be carried out at Mallow Castle after Cork Co. Council announced that a planning application for same will be lodged next week. The castle was purchased in recent years by the council, which has developed a plan for its development as a local amenity. These plans include connecting the castle site to the civic plaza by the use of similar stonework at the entrance, plus the opening of an entrance through the wall by the castle gazebo which would open the formal gardens to the public. By opening this wall, it is envisaged that the gardens in front of the castle will be developed to accommodate community events such as the recent Racing Home for Easter Festival. It is also planned to illuminate the old castle, as in former years. New walkways and signage are also planned. The news was welcomed by Cllr Jerry Mullally who said the castle, gardens and walkways would be enjoyed by future generations of Mallow people and visitors.
