Council Progresses €1.4m Civic Plaza Plan

Mallow Town Council is to begin site investigation work this month for the €1.4 million streetscape refurbishment project in the Clock House/Tuckey’s Hill area. The council has already advertised a Part 8 planning application for the project, and plans for the scheme are at present on display in the Town Hall, Library and Co. Council office in Anna-bella. The application will come before members of the council in March for a decision and if approved funding will be sought to proceed with the work.

Under the plan, a civic plaza will be created in Tuckey’s Hill, with traffic reduced to a single lane in order to allow for widened footpaths, plus seating, planting, a water feature, innovative street lighting, regeneration of laneways and the erection of a statue commemorating Thomas Davis. Under the plan, the existing mini-roundabout will be removed and replaced with traffic lights and pedestrian crossing areas, while Bridewell Lane at the rear of the Clock House will be one-way in terms of traffic.

It is hoped that some or all of the works will be completed by the end of 2014, the bicentenary of the birth of Thomas Davis.
