Cuisle Avondhu musicians visit Treguier

More than 40 people, including 18 musicians from Cuisle Avondhu travelled to Mallow’s twin town Treguier to perform at the two day Beg Chopin Festival. They performed to an enthusiastic crowd for more than an hour in the main square. The Cuisle group is made up of teenagers aged from 14 to 18 from the Mallow and Killavullen area. Cuisle also fields two other performing groups of younger children who had an equally successful weekend in Youghal earlier in the Summer. Invited by the festival and twinning committees, the large group stayed with local families for three nights. A special effort was made to develop links between the young people who travelled and their counterparts in Treguier. Following the Festival the Irish group spent a day in the nearby seaside resort of Perros Guirec, before a meal and musical evening in the Salle des Fetes. Great thanks are due to Paul and Geraldine Long in Mallow and Michael and Annemarie Even in Treguier and the local twinning committees for organising the visit. In addition Cuisle are very grateful to long-time supporters Cork County Council Arts Department and Cork County VEC. Avondhu Development provided a grant towards the musicians’ travelling costs and the racecourse, Tesco Ireland and local publicans all facilitated fundraising during the year. Cuisle Avondhu individual classes and group practice will resume in September (enrolment on Friday 7th September in the Nano Nagle Centre). The Mallow Twinning Committee can be contacted via its Chairman Councillor Richard Dempsey at the Town Hall.
