On Sunday, 28th August, dart men from Mallow and Mallow District gathered in Mona’s Bar to play for the Breda Davitt Cup. The Breda Davitt Cup had been in hiding for a few years but after the committee met with Mick Davitt it was agreed to play for this prestigious cup in Mona’s. The day started with a well-known character in Mallow, Dave O’Brien (Dob) playing one of Maureen’s best players,  Ken Lomaski, and Dave set a blistering pace with ton after ton, but his finishing let him down, so Ken went through to the next round, and it was back to Dunne’s for Dave.
Another first round game saw hot favourite for the cup, John Leonard, bowing out to veteran dart player Tim Manning (well done, Tim). First round games were swift and Mona’s patrons had one eye on the dart board and the other watching Dublin beating our neighbours Kerry.
The semi-final on board one saw Peter O’Donovan take on Nicky Sherman (The Shermanator). Peter got off to a great start and steamed into a 2-0 lead but his doubles let him down and Nicky got the better of him this time, 5-3.
So, on to the final and it was Ken Lomaski with his flying ponytail versus the Shermanator. The first two legs were shared and Ken took the third. In the 4th leg, Nicky got 100 followed by another 100 and finished with a 73 check-out, with Ken struggling to keep up. In the 5th leg Ken was in control but had 12 darts at double top and couldn’t finish, and Nicky took advantage and got double 10 to finish. Ken pulled up his socks and won the 6th leg but that seemed to inspire Nicky, and he never looked back as he finished the 7th and 8th legs and became the Breda Davitt Memorial Cup Champion for 2016. Klaus Richter got the highest checkout on the day with a 111 finish.
The Breda Davitt Cup was run in conjunction with Blackwater Valley Darts and we would like to thank Mick Davitt and son Colin for presenting the cup, and a special thank you to Richie and Mona’s staff. We would also like to thank the callers and markers on the day and special thanks to Mary for making delicious sandwiches.

Blackwater Valley Darts A.G.M.
Blackwater Valley Darts held their A.G.M. last Friday night in Maureen’s bar. Dart teams from all round Mallow and district were in attendance, and the meeting started with Chairman Jim Twomey giving a welcoming speech. Business started straight away and Mary Moynihan and Peter O’Donovan gave their reports. The outgoing committee was re-elected and some great ideas were put forward for the 2016-2017 season. Thank you to Noel and Maureen’s staff on the night. The committee and members look forward to a great year ahead and plenty of 180s.
