Davis College volleyball team makes history

On Thursday 6th December Davis College volleyball team wrote themselves into the history books by winning the All Ireland senior boys volleyball title for the first time. Having experienced some heartbreaking defeats at junior and cadette levels over the past number of years, the scenes following the final whistle proved that hard work and determination pay off. The opposition on the day was a much fancied team from Drumshambo in Co. Leitrim and they were the ones who started the contest better by taking the first set 25-18. After a shaky start to the second set, it was Davis College who eventually ground out a winning set and took the second set 25-22, and they needed to win this as the contest was a best out of three set competition. The third and final set of the game was a tense affair with both sides afraid to make mistakes, tensions running high and nerves beginning to fray; however, it was the Davis College men who made some big-time plays when it mattered most. Backed by some great support, the Mallow outfit finished powerfully and took the deciding set in commanding fashion 25-19. A hard regime of early morning and after school training paid off and these deserving players fulfilled their ambition of finishing their school volleyball careers as deserving All Ireland Champions.
