Denis McCarthy paid an emotional visit to the Lebanon last week in memory of his brother, Corporal Michael McCarthy, who died 25 years ago while on a tour of duty with the UN peace-keeping force. During his visit Denis met officers and soldiers of the 53rd Infantry Group, which is on a tour of duty in the region at the moment, and he also visited the area where his brother was killed in November 1991. He also attended the monthly ceremony at the Tibnin monument which was erected to remember the 47 Irish Defence Forces personnel who have lost their lives serving in the Lebanon, and he laid a wreath at the monu-ment, with a guard of honour supplied by Sergeant Emmet Murphy who is from Mallow. Also on a tour of duty with the 53rd Infantry Group is Company Quartermaster Brendan Fahy, also a native of Mallow, who as a boy went to school with Denis. The Deputy Commander of the 53rd Infantry Group, Commandant Pat Murnane, said: “It has been a pleasure to host Mr McCarthy, remembering our fallen colleagues is extremely important and it is a timely reminder  of how dangerous this mission can be.”
