Following the successful VEX Robotic trip of two weeks ago, it looks like Davis College has more tech-minded individuals blossoming in first year. As part of the Junior Cycle Schools’ Completion Programme organised by Ms. M. Kennedy, students were encouraged to develop a project using digital technology. The purpose of this project was to allow students become familiar with technology and develop their digital literacy; a skill that will be fundamental to all professions in the coming years. Class 1 Brid under the supervision of Mr. Cahill developed a stop-start animation based around the novel ‘The Dare.’ Using Lego and an iPad, students developed a set, script and animation to recreate a famous scene from the novel. All the class were awarded with certificates of achievement for their endeavours. The top prize of a Samsung Galaxy Tablet was awarded to third year student Clara Finn under the guidance of Ms. R O’Sullivan. Overcoming another 500 students nationwide, Clara developed a history of Mallow using old photographs, and recorded a narration to accompany this history. In a beautifully developed piece, Clara’s project was definitely of National Geographic standard and a future in broadcasting and editing maybe could be in sight for this media enthusiast.

Congratulations to maths whizz John

Congratulations to first year student John Buckley from Davis College. John sat a SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) in Dublin City University and finished in the top 10%. This allows John to avail of a talents programme facilitated by Dublin City University this coming Summer.

John will experience 2 weeks of maths, problem-solving, games and fun with like-minded individuals in one of Ireland’s finest third level institutions. All staff and students at Davis College would like to congratulate John on this huge accomplishment and his teacher Mr. O’Sullivan for mentoring him. We encourage all students to avail of such opportunities, all one must do is ask!

12th annual Davis College soccer tour

From Friday 6th to Monday 9th May, soccer fans from Davis College were spoilt for choice as they embarked on a journey to the home of soccer, Manchester. 37 students ranging from 1st to 5th year availed of the opportunity to indulge their passion for the beautiful game with a trip to Manchester City v Arsenal.

Leaving Davis College at 4am, students travelled to Dublin Port and across to Holyhead before finally stretching their legs in a round of paintballing in Wales. There were a number of snipers and soldier impersonators skulking around the grounds hoping to get revenge on the four accompanying teachers; Mr. McCarthy, Mr. R. O’Sullivan, Mr. Cahill and Ms. Radon.

After a good night’s sleep in the hotel, our students went to the National Football Museum and learned the history, passion and technology behind the modern soccer team. Stopping for a quick bite and shopping in the Trafford Centre, nerves and excitement built as we approached the Etihad Stadium for the big match. In a festival atmosphere, students walked the grounds and lived the enthusiasm that this soccer mad nation has to offer.

Goals came from Aguero and Sanchez amongst others but after a cracking game with nothing between the sides, Man City drew with Arsenal on a scoreline of 2-2. Students happily returned back to the hotel for dinner and swimming.

Our final day of the tour concluded with a trip to Manchester United’s stadium Old Trafford before clambering back on the bus to make the trip home.

The students of Davis College would like to thank Mr. McCarthy, Mr. O’Sullivan, Mr. Cahill and Ms. Radon for what was a dream trip for any soccer fan.
