“DJ Grimes of Bruff, an inspiration to us all” says Deputy Richard O’Donoghue

Four times All Star winner, Sean Finn of Bruff was delighted to present DJ Grimes with his very own Limerick jersey

A young South Limerick boy is something of a celebrity these days, certainly so following-on from his inspirational interview with Ray D’Arcy on his popular RTE Radio One Show.
DJ Grimes (11) of Bruff has a rare condition called Bardet Beidl and medical advice is that he could lose his sight. However ahead of this, the likely DJ, and his mother Caroline, have put out there his bucket list for 2022, many of the items of which have already been ticked courtesy of a variety of supporters.
An appearance on national radio was on that bucket list, as were events such as travelling in the lead tractor as part of the recent Greybridge Classic Christmas Lights Run, facilitated by local Independent TD Richard O’Donoghue.
“Listen, DJ and his mam, Caroline, are lovely people and I was only too willing to have him lead the run from Patrickswell onto Adare, and through many other villages in that neck of the woods,” said Richard. “He took it all in his stride, and certainly enjoyed the spin around that part of county Limerick, especially with the colour and sound of the occasion.”
DJ has also enjoyed a day’s ‘work experience’ at the TD’s constituency office in Kilmallock. “He was a help to ourselves in the office, and also on the phone…well able, actually, to handle concerns of those who happen to ring when he was in situ..a fine capable, courteous young person and a great help to us in the office.”
DJ has also revealed that he is to write a book in braille. “Write what you love to read yourself,” offered comedian and author David Walliams by way of welcome advice.
Rugby legend Donncha O’Callaghan has been in personal touch with DJ, while national carrier Aer Lingus have offered him a cockpit return trip from Shannon to London.
DJ has also tried karate of late, and was a guest of Limerick senior hurling manager John Kiely at their Munster Cup semi-final meeting against Kerry at the Gaelic Grounds.
For those wishing to offer money, DJ has set a target of €800 for the National Council for the Blind. To donate follow details on the below link.
