The launch of the Dromcollogher Cinema Disaster Centenary Events took place last week, beginning with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Casey, assisted by Fr. Ó Longaigh, followed by a Decade of the Rosary and wreath-laying at the communal grave. A procession then made its way to the library, where a minute’s silence was observed.
The evening continued in the hall with Master of Ceremonies Frank Brudair welcoming guests before introducing Chairman Gerry Keyes, who outlined the year’s programme of events. Minister Patrick O’Donovan, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, also addressed the gathering and pledged his commitment to working with the Dromcollogher26 committee to ensuring the victims are remembered with dignity.
The evening also featured a poignant performance by Amhlaoibh McSweeney, who composed a song in remembrance of the victims.
Also in attendance were Minister Niall Collins, Deputy Richard O’Donoghue, Cllr. Jerome Scanlan representing Lord Mayor Moran, Cllr. Tom Ruddle, Cllr. Liam Galvin and Cllr. Francis Foley. The evening concluded with light refreshments and the opportunity to view displays on the disaster, Pat Savage and members of the Research Group were on hand to share their expertise.
