Duck’s Island brightened by its first Christmas tree

There was a real festive atmosphere last Friday night when Santa arrived on his sleigh to light the first ever River Arra Christmas Tree on Duck’s Island, Newcastle West. All the resident ducks  and children galore were lined up anxiously awaiting Santa’s appearance, led by his favourite reindeer, Rudolph, and they were accompanied by a sweet little doggie, Cassie, who hitched a ride on the sleigh.

The Healing Stream Choir was in powerful voice and kept the crowd gathered there entertained as Santa made his way along the N21, stewarded by the Glin Friends of St. Ita’s and South Quay Residents’ Association members.

Fr. Richard Keane blessed the tree just before the lights were turned on to vociferous cheers from the crowd.

This was an historic event and has done much to enliven the seasonal aura of the riverside. South Quay Residents’ Association thanks everyone who helped bring this project to fruition and encourages you to visit the riverside area. Don’t forget to support the nearby businesses while you’re there!
