€200,000 GRANT FOR BROADFORD ENTERPRISE

A Broadford-based compost manufacturing company, Cremin Farm Compost, hopes to begin construction shortly on an expansion to its existing facility following confirmation of approval this week of a grant of €200,000 from West Limerick Resources.

The announcement has been welcomed by Maurice Cremin, owner of the company which was established almost ten years ago to process organic waste into a soil enhancing compost for use in agriculture and hort-iculture. Having been approved grant aid by the board of West Limerick Resources in December 2012, confirmation came through this week that the Department of Environ-ment, Community and Local Government has also sanctioned the €200,000 grant.

Cremin Farm Compost is the only privately-owned producer of certified quality compost in the south of Ireland. Since its establishment in 2004 the operation has been processing food waste from companies such as Kerry Foods, along with seaweed waste, waste grain and sewage waste from Limerick, Cork, Clare and Kerry County Councils. With business continuing to grow Maurice recognised that his current facility, which was grant aided by West Limerick Resources almost ten years ago, is no longer able to cope with demand. He plans to expand the business’s processing sheds, which will allow for a longer composting time, reducing the need for the addition of sawdust and facilitating better odour control. Maurice will also install a new weighbridge, access road and electrical system, and concrete the facility’s yards, enabling the business to better meet its customers’ needs. It is estimated that the entire project will cost in excess of €300,000 and will lead to the creation of a number of new jobs over the next four years.

West Limerick Resources Manager Shay Riordan congratulated Maurice on his vision and the success of his business to date, wishing him the best for the future. “West Limerick Resources are delighted to be able to support small local businesses like Cremin Farm Compost,” Mr. O’Riordan said. The approval has also been welcomed by Dan Neville T.D.
