On Tuesday of this week, Transition Year students of the Patrician Academy gathered in the school hall to celebrate the recent success of one of their own, Eoghan Kenny, a youth volunteer who is one of just 20 finalists nationally for the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards. Presenting a certificate to Eoghan, Ms. Mary Keane, of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals addressed the assembled gathering and stressed the importance of volunteerism. She said that, “Helping others inspires hope and optimism.” She commended Eoghan’s outstanding volunteer work, both within the school community and the wider community of Mallow. Eoghan helps out at his local church and is a member of the Mallow Parish Pastoral Council. He led his school student council in organising Christmas food hampers for local charities. Eoghan also enjoys training the local under 11 hurling and football teams and was a volunteer for the organisation team for the Munster Maths and Science Fair.
Eoghan will be presented with €500 and an engraved silver medallion at the gala awards ceremony on 23rd March at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dublin. At the gala, two of the 20 finalists will be named All-Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year and will receive €1,000, a gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school, and an all-expenses-paid trip to the United States in May to participate in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. On behalf of the Board of Management and the students and teachers of the school, Principal Catherine Fitzpatrick congratulated Eoghan and wished him every success in Dublin on Thursday March 23rd.
