Feenagh N.S. Raise 8th Green Flag

June 16th was a proud day for the pupils, parents, grandparents, staff and Board of Management of Feenagh N.S. as it raised its eighth Green Flag, the first school in Ireland to do so. To add to this, the new school extension was blessed and formally opened.

Celebrations commenced with Mass at 11a.m. and Fr. Murphy blessed the new classroom, corridor and car park. Sr. Martina, Chairperson of the Board of Management then cut the ribbon, declaring the extension formally open. This was followed by Mrs Bennis, Principal, welcoming everyone especially our invited guest Dónal O’Grady, Captain of Limerick senior hurling team and Sinéad McDonnell EAO with Limerick City and County Council.

Mrs O’Flynn introduced the Green Schools Committee who then gave a brief outline of the hard work done over the past two years on the themes, Global Citizenship and Waste. Being a true Global Citizen means that we understand that all people have equal rights, while at the same time we value diversity. Pupils learned about Fairtrade and to value the earth’s resources.

Sinéad McDonnell congratulated all on their commitment and dedication to the Green Schools Programme over the past sixteen years. This is a result of the huge support the programme receives from parents, grandparents, the wider community and our caretaker Pat Sweeney. Our special guest Dónal O’Grady reiterated these sentiments and led the pupils to the flagpole where after a tumultuous countdown, he hoisted the eighth Green Flag over Feenagh National School. An historic occasion indeed.

Refreshments were served to all parents and visitors by our very supportive and hardworking Parents Association. Treats were also given to our pupils and the final surprise, the ice-bream van paid a visit. Each pupil enjoyed a beautiful, creamy cone. Well deserved.

Pupils gave a wonderful display of set dancing to the beat of Donie Nolan’s fine accordion playing, even some parents were out on the floor.

A tremendous celebration for our whole school community and parish. Míle buíochas to all.
