Residents in Drom-collogher were left with a massive clean-up this week after torrential rain overwhelmed the area last weekend. The flooding was caused by a 90-minute deluge of rain which hit the area on Sunday evening, but ironically it was so localised that nearby villages like Feohanagh were left untouched. Dromcollogher, however, did not escape, with water flowing off the hills and out of the fields and onto roads, overwhelming drains and culverts and leaving roads in every direction under water. Added to this, a number of houses were hit by rising water, while Dromcollogher Respite Care Centre was also under threat.
Emergency services, including Council, Fire Service and Civil Defence were quickly on the scene, closing roads and giving assistance to residents. By 1am on Monday morning, the flood had receded, and roads could be reopened to traffic, but there still remained the job of assessing the damage caused, plus a clean-up of the affected areas and buildings.
Councillor Jerome Scanlan this week praised the Emergency Services for their fast response, but stressed the urgent need for preventative measures in certain areas, such as from Buckley Terrace towards the church, the R515 road, the Pike area, and the area where the respite care centre is located.
