FOYNES HOST MERMAID MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP

Wonderful weather, a great atmosphere and winning boats all contributed to a fantastic weekend at Foynes Yacht Club. The club hosted the Mermaid Munster championship, members and visiting sailors alike agreed it was a great event .The club facilities have improved greatly in recent years. The new viewing balcony is a great way to see the racing as these graceful wooden boats took to the water in perfect racing conditions. Celebrations reached their peak as on Sunday it was announced that the winning boat was from Foynes! The able crew of Darragh McCormack together with his brother Mark and friend Cathal McMahon sailed home to victory making it a first place win for Foynes, a feat not achieved for 20 years. The Carthy clan from Rush Yacht Club, Dublin were in 2nd and again a Foynes boat with Vincent McCormack, Roisin McCormack and Michael Lynch in 3rd. The success of such an event is due to all the volunteers who gave of their time to ensure all ran smoothly. Congratulations to all at FYC.

Reminder

Next weekend is another busy weekend at Foynes Yacht club. The club will host the Connacht Optimist championship. These small sailing dinghies will be raced by youngsters aged 9-14 years and Foynes is expecting over 100 boats to compete. Racing takes place on Saturday and Sunday and should be a great spectacle to see from the shore. It’s wonderful to see so many people availing of the great facility that is the Shannon estuary! Great credit due to all at Foynes for promoting the club, its facilities and encouraging so many young people to get involved.

The annual sailing academy will begin again this month with sailing summer camps for children aged 8-18. Each camp runs for 1 week. Places still available. Contact the club 069-65261 or any club member.
