Girls handball has taken off in Mallow!

The recent introduction of a girls handball night has been a great success for Mallow Handball Club, with increasing member-ship each week. Last Sunday some of the girls represented Mallow Handball Club in the Ballydesmond Girls Handball Blitz. While the opposition was both experienced and tough, the Mallow girls stepped up to the plate and held Bally-desmond to a draw. Both singles and doubles games were played during the blitz. Girls handball training is held on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7pm. Contact John (sec) on 087-9822747 for details on how to join. Last Saturday the 40×20 team of six U12/13 Munster Championship took place in Clarecastle. The Cork team did very well but unfortunately lost in the final. The team consisted of Michael O’Malley (Mallow), Tadhg O’Neill (Mallow), David Walsh (Mallow), Cian O’Driscoll (Mallow), Jerry O’Sullivan (Boherbue) and Darragh Moynihan (Bally-desmond). The Cork team played well but were up against it in some matches. Tadhg O’Neill partnered by Jerry O’Sullivan were defeated by Jerome Cahill and Séan Healy of Tipperary 15-3, 15-11. Cian O’Driscoll and David Walsh then fought hard to defeat Colin Ryan and Seán McAdams of Tipperary 15-4, 15-10. There was still hope for the Cork boys and they brought the score from 30-14 to 44 all. Michael O’Malley and Darragh Moynihan then faced James Prentice and John McGrath and were beaten 15-10, 15-0. During the competition the boys showed great sportsman-ship and endurance. The scores tallied up at the end of the day Tipperary 74, Cork 54. Understandably disappointed the Cork lads will have to be consoled with a Munster silver medal this time, but hopefully will succeed in claiming the title next year. Hasta la victoria siempre!
