Host families needed for Rebel Week

Mallow will host an 80-strong marching band from Prague, the Czech capital, from October 14th to 20th as part of Rebel Week 2013, and a call has gone out for host families in Mallow and the surrounding area. To that end, Cllr Ronan Sheehan will host a public meeting next Tuesday August 27th in the Hibernian Hotel at 7.30pm with the aim of generating ideas and seeking volunteers as well as providing further information. Rebel Week will be a week-long celebration of ‘all things Cork’ with a specific focus on bringing international visitors and families home to Cork county and city. A number of events have been planned throughout the county as part of the celebrations and Cllr Sheehan has been working with Cork County Council in arranging to have Mal-low participate in the international marching bands element of the week.

Explaining the ethos behind the idea, Cllr Sheehan said, “Part of the Rebel Week celebrations will be to invite a number of international marching bands to Cork. I hope that the people of Mallow will open their homes to facilitate these visitors. There will be nine towns throughout the county participating in the hos-ting of these bands, and I feel that the inclusion of Mallow will boost tourism and Mallow’s general profile. In the past Mallow has always had a firm tradition of playing host to international visitors through the Folk Gath-ering and our twinning links with Tregueir, France and Tinley Park, Illinois. Rebel Week presents a unique opportunity for Mallow to continue this tradition.”

“The band that has been invited to Mallow will come from Prague in the Czech Republic. Overall it is anticipated that there will be 80-90 guests arriving in Mallow. There has been great interest to date and lots of people have already offered to accommodate these visitors, however we still need volunteer hosts,” Cllr Sheehan explained.
