Mallow golfer James Sugrue is one of three Irish players selected for the 10-man Great Britain and Ireland team to compete in the Walker Cup, which will be held at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) on Saturday and Sunday 7th and 8th Septem-ber. It has been a fantastic year for James, who became the first Irishman to win the Amateur Championship since 2005 and then nar-rowly missed the cut in the British Open at Royal Portrush. He also represen-ted Ireland in the European Amateur Team Champion-ship this summer, and has been invited to play in the US Open and US Masters in 2020. The Walker Cup is the amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup and is hotly-contested by the best up and coming golfers in the world.
Craig Watson, Captain of the British and Irish team, said: “The Walker Cup is a fantastic opportunity for these amateur golfers to demonstrate their talents on the big stage and it will be an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.”
Mallow Golf Club will host its Senior Scratch Cup this weekend, and James will surely be the centre of attention when he tees up in the competition.
