James Sugrue to make pro golf debut next week

Mallow golfer James Sug-rue, who turned pro-fessional last November, will make his debut on the Challenge Tour in Sweden this month, starting on 13th May in the Range Servant Challenge in Malmö, and the following week’s Dormy Open at Österåkers Golfklubb from May 19th-22nd. After this he will travel home for the Irish Challenge at Portmarnock Links from May 27th-30th, situated right next door to Portmarnock Golf Club, scene of his thrilling win in the Amateur in 2019.
James had a spectacular last season on the amateur circuit, travelling to the United States for the US Open and then returning for the US Masters, where he became the first amateur from Great Britain or Ireland to break par at Augusta National when he carded a brilliant 71 in the second round.
After turning professional he was expecting a busy start to 2021, but Covid-19 delayed his professional debut. Now, though, he is ready to get out on the great golf courses of Europe and further afield, and he travelled to Spain last week to sharpen his game ahead of his professional debut. “I can’t wait to get going,” said Sugrue, and officers and members of his home club in Mallow are wishing him all the best.
