James tees up a professional career

James Sugrue.

Mallow golfer James Sugrue has joined the professional ranks after a whirlwind two years which began with him winning the Amateur Open and ended with him being named the number one amateur golfer in Europe, and no. 5 in the world. James has signed with Swedish-based manage-ment company Sportyard, whose past clients include Johan Edfors, Carl Pettersson, Martin Kaymer, Alvaro Quiros and European Ryder Cup vice-captain Robert Karlsson.
A former South of Ireland champion and Walker Cup player, James hit the headlines after winning the Amateur Open in 2019, and this win saw him invited to play in the British Open, US Open and US Masters, as well as the Oman Open, and the Irish Open where he was among the top performers over the four days of the competition.
James has been a member of Mallow Golf Club since starting out in the sport, and everyone in the club is proud of his success, as of course are his parents Margaret and Michael and all his family. To which we can only add best wishes to James and say that we’re looking forward to seeing him in action on the pro tour in the months and years ahead.
