James tees up in US Open

Mallow golfer James Sugrue will take to the fairways with the best golfers in the world this weekend, when he competes in the US Open at Winged Foot in New York, and will tee off at 12.54pm today Thursday with Lee Westwood and Bubba Watson. James is the first Mallow native to play in the US Open, and got the invite after winning the British Amateur Open in 2019. His caddy for the competition will be his long-time friend Conor Dowling, and he is coached by PGA Professional Michael Collins. Unfortunately, James’s family and supporters from Mallow Golf Club were not able to travel to the US for the competition, but they will be glued to the television and following updates online over the next two days as James tries to make the cut and qualify to play on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a busy time for James, who will be back in the US in November for the Masters before hopefully turning professional in the new year.
