In 2016 an innovative group of young people worked together to create a site specific event over 3 acres in The Old Creamery with the community at Knocklong. Those young adults, The Leading Lyts, devised a play that led 1,500 people to visit Knocklong and resulted in a TV broadcast of the performance by RTE on Nationwide.
Now they are inviting other 18+ actors and emerging young artists to join them in Residence at The GAFF 36 Cecil Street, Limerick.
The GAFF welcomes the Leading LYTs as Young GAFF Company in Residence for 2018. Leading LYTs is made up of past members of the County LYT who wish to continue to engage with youth theatre as adults. Young people (aged 18-30) are invited to join to make great theatre, work with emerging young artists and participate in European youth exchanges. To join County Limerick Youth Theatre’s Leading LYTs as Young GAFF Company in Residence for 2018 come along to the GAFF any Wednesday 6.30-8.30pm commencing on Wednesday 28th March and see what it’s all about.
Leading LYTs engage in theatre skills acquisition and professional development, learn facilitation skills and offer opportunities to work as young facilitators (accompanied by Garda vetting and child protection accreditation), actors, technicians, event organ-isers and choreographers. They are also supported to develop as creative artists and may access European training and collaborate with European artists under the Erasmus+ EVS, training and Youth Exchange programmes.
“This is something we’ve planned doing for a long time,” says Leading Lyt Martin McCormack, who is on placement with County LYT from Mary I “and it’s just wonderful that The GAFF have given us the opportunity to work in a city centre space”
The group have already put in Erasmus+ applications to travel to Spain and Italy this summer to make theatre and performance with European counterparts. For more information contact Fiona Quinn 086 8246915.
