LIMERICK’S YOUTH GOT TALENT

LIT’s Millennium Theatre was packed to the rafters on Friday evening last, as young people from around the city and county descended on the campus for Limerick Youth Service’s Variety & Fashion Show 2012.

The near 300 in attendance were treated to a variety of singing and dance acts, a short film and a very unique fashion show.

The judging panel, Bridget Whelan of the Nenagh Players, Gary Meehan of Gary Meehan Dance School and the current Limerick Rose, Suzanne O’Brien, were faced with the unenviable task of choosing the winners.

After careful deliberation the winners were as follows. In the singing category success went to Zara Whelan from Newcastle West Youth Club (solo) and trio of Michelle O’Connor, Michela Sheedy and Lauren Brazil from Kilmallock Youth Club, who wowed everyone with their cover of U2’s With or without You, won the group award.

In the talent and dance categories there was double delight for Castleconnell with Cian O’Dowd winning the talent section, with the trio Melissa Byrnes, Courtney Reilly and Celina Murphy, taking home the dance award.

Not be outdone, their east Limerick neighbours at Fedamore Youth Club won the fashion show with their hilarious take on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The audience were also treated to a special short film that was produced by young people at the Castleconnell Youth Project. The six minute feature chronicled the invasion of zombies and will surely feature on the film festival circuit according to Martin Duhig of Castleconnell Youth Project.

Limerick Youth Service would like to thank all who contributed to the Variety Show and the staff who went above and beyond in making the event such as a success. We look forward to an even bigger one in 2013.
