Limerick have a chance to close a gap of almost a couple of lifetimes with victory over Kildare in Saturday’s Tailteann Cup Final at Croke Park, throw-in at 2.30pm.
The fixture is a ‘winner on the day’ scenario, so there is the possibility of both extra-time and dreaded penalties.
It will be followed, at 5pm, by our neighbours Kerry and Tyrone in the quarter-final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
Not since way back in 1896 has the county tasted success in senior football at championship level. That team was captained by Con Fitzgerald of Glin.
The current crop of exemplary county ambassadors is capably led by Cillian Fahy, Dromcollogher/Broadford.
“We have, in this group, a unique crop of men whom we are privileged to witness playing for Limerick,” said Limerick Football Committee Chairman, Wayne Fitzgerald, Gerald Griffins.
“I want to thank all the players for the incredible sacrifices they give for our county, year in, year out and each one deserves all the accolades that the 2025 success brings.
“They’ve inspired a new generation of footballers across Limerick.”
Newcastle West’s Jimmy Lee is manager of a team which, earlier in the year, secured National League success with promotion to Division 3.
“I want to thank each member of the management and backroom team for everything, especially for their unlimited time and effort throughout the year,” Wayne added.
“Thanks also to our supporters, your energy has lifted the team every step of the way from Longford to London, and from Antrim to Dublin.
“Sincere gratitude to our sponsors who have been with us throughout the years.
“As we look forward to the final in Croke Park, we do so with optimism and belief.”
He concluded, “This season has laid a solid foundation and I believe the best is yet to come.”
