Seven thousand of Ireland’s best young athletes and competitors will descend on the University of Limerick for the Aldi Community Games National Finals this weekend. UL is hosting the National Finals for the first time, and they will take place over two weekends, starting this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and then on August 17th-19th.
Speaking this week, Community Games CEO John Byrne said: “We are looking forward to a new era for Community Games as we embark on a three-year partnership with University of Limerick to host our National Festivals.”
In the run-up to the National Finals, more than 160,000 children in 575 communities have taken part in over 200 scheduled regional events, and this weekend’s action will bring together the regional champions in friendly competition across a wide range of sporting and cultural activities, individual and team sports. Three hundred volunteers will also be on hand each day, overseeing activities such as swimming, rugby, badminton, Gaelic football, hurling, skittles, debating, draughts, cross country, gymnastics and more.
