The country may be in COVID-19 lockdown, but communities are coming together even while they are social distancing. In Mallow there have been several instances of people performing songs for their neighbours, inspired by the balcony singers in Italy. On Saturday last, Frank Heffernan, who is well-known locally as a singer with The Rat Pack, set up his amplification system in his front garden at Aldworth Heights and gave a 90-minute performance of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin songs for his neighbours. On the other side of Mallow Bridge, singer-songwriter Majella Murphy has been entertaining her neigh-bours in O’Sullivan’s Place, and last Saturday gave a performance to raise funds for Mallow Search and Rescue. Several other areas have held impromptu events as well, including Castle Grove estate last weekend, and Mallow native Hank Wedel gave a 30-minute show outside his home in Cork city last weekend. If any other areas are holding events in the near future, let us know in the Mallow Star and we will record them for posterity.
