Lough Gur has improved dramatically as everyone across Ireland found a greater appreciation for their outdoor places over the past two years.
In recognition of these achievements, including the refurbishment of Lough Gur Visitor Centre, opening of a new lakeview playground, installation of the Lakeshore Park Kiosk along with placement of a full-time gardener on site, upgrade of public facilities and a range of extended services now on offer for all visitors, Lough Gur was honoured with a special accolade at the highly competitive IPB Pride of Place Awards ceremony that took place in Killarney on Monday last. As an all-Ireland competition, to say that the standard was high is an understatement.
Out of all 32 counties there was one winner from Sligo and two runner up prizes. Lough Gur volunteers and community members were ecstatic to receive a highly coveted runner up award that recognises the continuous improvement at the wonderful South Limerick amenity. The Pride of Place Award specifically marks collaboration between local councils and the community. Limerick City and County Council continues to positively and progressively support initiatives in Lough Gur for the benefit of all who visit there. Cllr Brigid Teefy formally put forward Lough Gur Development for nomination, a fact which was warmly appreciated by all involved.
