Mallow 10 to take place this Sunday

1,200 runners and family members and supporters from all over Ireland will descend on Mallow this Sunday for the annual 10 Mile Road Race. Fun runners will rub shoulders with elite athletes at the start outside O’Brien’s Ford Dealers, and a great race is anticipated, with some of the country’s top runners lining up to have a go at winning some of the €5,000 prize fund. The prize for breaking the club record is very tempting, with €500 on offer for any man who can run 10 miles in under 49.40, and any woman who lowers the record of 56.53. For many runners, however, the club record will be of no consequence as they try the 10 mile distance for the first time, and a special mention must be made of Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís parents who have been training since the start of the year for the race.

The race will start at 12.30pm and go out the old Cork Road via Gouldshill, then back to Annabella Roundabout, followed by a circuit via the old beet factory, finishing in the Town Park near Dairygold Co-Op Superstores, so there will be lots of vantage points to watch the race.

Motorists should please take note that there will be traffic restrictions at various points during the race, particularly the Old Cork Road and Town Park, and parking will also be an issue because of the number of visitors to the town. Motorists and visitors are asked to obey stewards to ensure the safety of runners.
