Mallow GAA celebrates 40th anniversary of county hurling triumph

What an absolute privilege it was for Mallow GAA to host a very special night last Saturday to mark the 40th anniversary of the famous 1972 County Intermediate Hurling Championship victory over Blackrock. Any younger members of the club and town no doubt would have grown up hearing the names of Tommy Sheehan, who was captain that day, Noel Reagan (RIP), Paddy Carey, Bernie Barrett, Pat ‘Chocolate’ Healy, brothers Kevin and Liam Sheehan, Barry Golden, Eamonn O’Sullivan, Mick Blake, Pat Buckley, Fr Paddy Buckley, Bro. Marcus, Pat O’Leary, Jimmy MacSweeney, Dermot Coakley, Eddie Walsh, Donie Shine and Paddy Sheahan, all names forever etched in the club’s history and one of the greatest teams to represent Mallow GAA Club. A huge crowd of family, friends and club members gathered to pay their respects to those mighty men of 1972, and following a lovely meal and presentations, all the team members and their families relived that special day and no doubt filled in the gaps from the intervening years. It’s nights like these that remind us what it is to be part of the GAA or any association, and we look forward to seeing all involved very soon again.
