Mallow will extend a warm welcome this weekend to its twin town friends, as a group of 35 adults and children arrive from Treguier for a week of activities. The dele-gation will be led by the newly-elected Mayor of Treguier, Gueric Arhant, who said this week, “I first came to Mallow with my parents and brother when I was twelve years old. I have visited many times since then, so it gives me special pleasure to return as Mayor of Treguier”.
Chairman of the Mallow Twining Committee, Richard Dempsey, said, “our Breton visitors will have an interesting pro-gramme which combines family visits with public events. These include an evening of traditional music hosted by Cuisle Avondhu in the Hibernian Hotel on Bank Holiday Sunday night, beginning at 8pm. The following Thursday will see the official opening of the Mallow-Treguier Europe Direct Exhibition at 5.30pm in the Library, and on Friday evening the Bretons will attend the evening meeting at the local racecourse, followed by a farewell party in Corkery’s Bar in Dromahane. President of the Mallow Twinning Committee, Pat McNally said this week, “We look forward to meeting lots of old and new friends at these events”.
Entry to all events is free and open to the public. Mallow has been twinned with Treguier since the 1980s, and the Breton town is a leading tourist destination in Brittany, conveniently located just two hours’ drive from the ferry port at Roscoff. A visit to the town during a summer holiday or as part of a twinning group is a great experience for anyone from Mallow, as the Irish flag flies proudly over the Town Hall, and there is even an Embassy of Mallow at Tara Guesthouse on Rue Ernst Renan, run by long-time friends of Mallow, Guy and Malou Arhant.
